Wilmington, NC was origionally incorporated in about 1739. It was origionally known as New Liverpool, Newton, and New Town before taking its name from Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington. Wilmington was founded mostly by Englishmen who set up thriving maritime businesses in the area. It quickly became populated as well by Scottish immigrants and those who were not from landed families in the surroundng countryside. Wilmington became a hub for the Sons of Liberty and was known as the place where The Stamp Actwas first resisted in the colonies. During the Revolutionary War Wimington was occupied by Major Craig and was the place where Cornwallis used for a embarkation point to Yorktown. Wilmington, NC is home to several famous Americans from the period including Robert Howe and William Hooper, who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independance. After the war, Wilmington was mostly a forgotten town of little importance and by 1840 had a populationof only 5,000 people. Amazingly, it was the largestcity in North Carolina during this time. With the Civil War, Wilmington became known as a city that was used by many blockade runners to get out and get in stores for the Confederacy and was the last port town of the Confederacy to fall. Post-war Wilmington became the home of many freed salves and became famous for being the home of the first black doctor, lawyer, and architect.
