Wichita Falls, TX is home to more than 101,000 people and Shepherd Air Force Base. The areas was settled as early as the 1700s, but it was the cattle ranchers of the mid-1800s that turned the place into a town. Wichita Falls, TX became the county seat of Wichita County when the Fort Worth and Denver Railway arrived in 1882. Interestingly, the city had no actual falls for most of its history. A flood destroyed the original falls in 1886, but a new, grander version wasnt built until the 1980s. Wichita Falls, TX was heavily damaged by tornadoes in 1964 and 1979. It is also home to Midwestern State University and claims the band Bowling for Soup as an export. U.S. Senator John Tower and Broadway dancer Tommy Tune are also from the city.
