A suburb of Denver, Westminster, Colorado is the states seventh most populated city. Money magazine ranked it the twenty-fourth best place to live in America. In 1858, the discovery of gold north of Denver brought the region to the attention of the country. At first only antelope and buffalo lived in the area, but after the gold was found, people came from the east to seek their fortune and settled here.
The town went through several name changes before it was finally named in honor of Westminster University, which is located in Westminster Castle, This structure was built in 1891 and is sometimes known as the Princeton of the West. Westminster Mall is the site of a Dillards, J.C.Penney and Sears, and The Orchard Town Center is another mall built around a Macys, J.C. Penney, and American Eagle Outfitters. Two United States Congressmen were born in Westminster, Colorado, as were Derrick Martin, a National League football player, and Alma Birdwell White, the founder of the Pillar of Fire Church. Westminster, Colorado is an environmentally friendly city, with parks and trails and lots of open space. The Big Dry Creek Trail is one of the citys best open spaces. Standley Lake Regional Park is another of the citys open space facilities, with a 210-acre lake offering boating and fishing and more than fourteen miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. The City hall has a bell tower with 181 steps to a magnificent view of the entire area and the majestic Rocky Mountains. The city has a rich historical heritage and there are several buildings like the Bowles House Museum, the Pillar of Fire Building and Westminster Castle that are on the National Register of Historic Places.
