The city of Waterbury, CT was incorporated in 1853 however there have been European settlers living in there since 1674. Originally the settlement was called Mattatuck during the early years but the name was changed to Waterbury in 1686. The city has a few interesting accomplishments such as being the first city in the United States to roll brass (thus the nickname of Brass City) and the can opener was invented in Waterbury in 1858. The city also was very active in the Revolutionary War, in which 689 men from the city fought against Great Britain. Waterbury is located roughly in the center of the state of Connecticut, on the Naugatuck River. For much of its history the city has been an important industrial center. The most easily recognized landmark is the Union Station Clocktower which stands 240 feet high near the center of the city.
