Washington, DC, the capital of the United States of America, was founded on July 16th, 1790. The DC in the citys name is a result of the legal name of the District of Columbia. Until the Act of Congess in 1871, the city of Washington was a seperate municipality from the District of Columbia. The act created a single municipal government for the entire district. The city is situated on the north bank of the Potomac River.
Within the city are the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank, as well as the centres of all three branches of the US government.
Washington, DC is located in the humid subtropical climate and a combination of heat and humidity means the city endures regular thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes.
