For thousands of years, the Vancouver area was home to native people who flourished on the bounty of forest and river. Washington is the oldest white settlement in the West, located where the Hudson Bay Company established Fort Vancouver in the 1700s. The City of Vancouver embarked on an aggressive program to bring new life to the downtown through an ambitious renewal project. The inspired decision involved seamlessly blending park, Public Square, improved street designs and new housing in the historic Esther Short district of downtown. In 1857, the City of Vancouver incorporated. Through the rest of the century, Vancouver steadily developed. In 1908, the first rail line east through the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge reached Vancouver. In 1910, a railroad bridge was opened south across the Columbia. In 1917, the Interstate Bridge was completed.
