Tulsa, OK was founded in 1836 by the Creek Indians upon their arrival to the Arkansas River. Incorporated in 1898, Tulsa became the first city in the United States to erect a yield sign, located at 5th and Birmingham. Located 90 miles northeast of the state capital Oklahoma City, Tulsa has a current population of around 390,000, making it the second largest city in the state. Much like many of its neighboring cities in Texas, Tulsa has been predominately known for its oil industries, but in recent years has shifted to other economic endeavors such as energy and finance. The city averages 39 inches of rain and 8 inches of snow a year, respectively. Tulsa currently possesses a variety of outdoor activities for visitors, including a zoo and garden center that serves as the areas headquarters for horticulture.
