The name Syracuse has gone through alot of name changes, it was first inhabited by Indians and then the French settlers moved in the 1600s. There were different Indian tribes already there and the French dream was short lived. After the Revolutionary War more settlers came to inhabit the land. Syracuse wasnt always called such, the city had gone through eight names before it was officially known as Syracuse, New York. The area had been known for its salty content, and then in the early 1900s it became an industrial community, it was best known for the salt content though. Syracuse, NY also was well know for being the great central depot on the Underground Railroad. The City is also known for its population of trees, the sugar maple, Northern white cedar, and European buckthorn are just to mention a few. The whether climate is mixed, Syracuse is known for its snow as well as its cool summers.
