Springfield, MO is a mid-sized city in Southwestern Missouri that is known as The Queen City of the Ozarks. After the area became a part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 under Thomas Jefferson, settlers slowly reached what is now Springfield. Missouri became a state in 1821, and Springfield incorporated as a city soon after in 1838. The current population is estimated at 157,000 individuals. The Springfield, MO economy is dominated by education and health care. The largest employers in the city are the St. Johns Health System, CoxHealth, Wal-Mart Stores, Springfield Public Schools, Missouri State University, and the United States Government. Some famous people that at one time have called Springfield, MO home include former Attorney General John Ashcroft and former NASA astronaut Janet Kavandi.
