South Gate , California is the sixteenth largest city in the state of California. In 2009, the population was estimated to be about one hundred two thousand people. The city was incorporated in 1923. In 1965, South Gate, California adopted the azalea as its official flower. South Gate, California was originally inhabited by the Tongva Native American tribe. They shared the land with the Gabrielino tribe. South Gate is just seven and a half square miles, but it is home to nearly forty churches. The churches are various denominations. South Gate was also the place where famed aviator Amelia Earhart learned how to fly. It is the hometown of the first platinum selling Latino rap group , Cypress Hill. Mark Gonzales, the founder of modern street skateboarding was also born in the California town and calls it home.
