Shreveport, LA is a major city in the northwest section of Louisiana. The last census put the population of the city at 200,145 people. The city was founded in 1836 at the meeting point of the Red River and the Texas Trail. Shreveport, LA once had an active slave market, but slave trading was not as active there as it was in larger cities such as New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina, Shreveport experienced a large influx of evacuees, many of whom stayed in the area permanently. The local economy recently received a blow when it was announced that General Motors will be closing its Shreveport manufacturing plant by the end of 2012. Shreveport, LA counts many notable individuals as former residents, including legendary guitarist Huddie Ledbetter, lawyer Johnnie Cochran, and actor Jared Leto.
