The city of Santa Barbara was first visited by Portuguese explorer João Cabrilho in 1542. It was first settled in 1602 by the Spanish and given the name Santa Barabara. Prior to European contact the area was inhabited by the Native American Chumash people and had been for the previous 10,000 years. The Spanish reign of the region ended in 1822 with the end of the Mexican War of Independence. Mexico then ruled the area for the next 24 years until 1846 when the region became part of the United States in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. During the Gold Rush time of the mid 1800s Santa Barabara became a haven for bandits and became a lawless town. Early in the 20th century oil was found in the beach region just east of Santa Barbara. The first offshore drilling began in this area. Santa Barbara is located right on the Pacific Ocean about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Santa Barbara is home to many colleges such as The University of California, Santa Barbara.
