Located at the mouth of river Salinas, the city enjoys a mild climate and has ideal weather for the wine and floral industry to thrive. From the beginning, the citys economy has been agro based. It happens to be one of Californias most fertile regions and produces large quantities of food grains, vegetables and flowers for export all over the USA. It is called the Salad Bowl of the World since more than 80% of the lettuce consumed in America is produced here. Originally settled by the Ensen tribe of Native Americans, the city today has a population of over 150,000. Salinas was also the hometown of legendary writer and Nobel Laureate John Steinbeck. The city and has named the resource rich National Steinbeck Center, the Steinbeck House and the John Steinbeck Library in his honor.
