Roanoke County was formed in 1838,with a population of 5,000.These people were unknown but certainly they not large in numbers.The town of Salem became the county seat and had the the population of about 200 with Big Lick numbering about 50 residents.There was even smaller community of Vinton which was to the east of Big Lick connected by a narrow brick road.
There was a railroad establish in 1852,but it missed Big Lick.So the the little town moved on tracks,carrying its name with it.The original town became the Old Lick.In 1874 a new centre was formed as the town of Big Lick.
For generations because of salt marshes, or licks as they are called,had been a gathering place for elk, buffalo and deer.There were also Indians who hunted these animals.The salt marshes were to lend their name to the first village in the Roanoke Valley.It was started on the east-west path as
Gainsborough in 1834; the town came to be known as Big Lick.
