Redmond, WA, known as the bicycle capital of Northwest, hosts the nations oldest bicycle road race started which in 1939 as a way to raise money for school athletic equipment and downtown Christmas decorations. Founded in 1871 and incorporated in 1912, Redmond was originally a logging town. Surprisingly, it wasnt roads that connected Redmond with the larger city of Seattle in the early days, but steamboats, which were used up until 1916 via the Sammamish River and the lake that feeds it. Railroad began to help the lumber industry boom in 1898 adding passenger service 1909. Redmond was a true wild west town with saloons, hotels, blacksmiths, eateries and mercantile stores. In the 1920s the lumber industry faded out to be replaced by agriculture which continues today with such fantastic examples as The Chateau Ste Michelle Winery. Redmond found its real place as a permanent community in 1940 with the opening of the first of two floating bridges over Lake Washington connecting Redmond more directly to Seattle. That years 503 person population has exploded to over 50,000 people who enjoy the beautiful lake Sammamish, Cascade foothills and fantastic lifestyle to be found in Redmond, WA.
