Plano, Texas was origionally founded in the very early 1840s around a few small businesses ran by local settlers. Under president Filmore the citizens suggested the name of the city and the U.S. Mail service accepted the name and the city of Plano was born. The city of Plano remained very small, increasing to just 500 people by 1874, just a year after it was incorporated. The city population grew very slowly despite the railroad connection and by 1900 had just over 1300 people. It wasnt until WW2 that the city started to really prosper and grow. The real growth though came after 1960 when several work projects and a change in how the tax structure was in Plano that things changed, drawing people from other Dallas suburbs. Also several large corporations, including J.C. Pennys and Frito Lay moved their coporate headquarters to Plano drawing on a large workforce that has added to the population of the city.
