Olathe, Kansas is the fifth most populous city in the state of Kansas. It is located in the northern part of the state and was founded in 1857. The city of Olathe, Kansas was founded by Dr. John T. Barton, who picked the site out while on a ride in the prairie. The name of the town came from the Shawnee word for beautiful. Barton told friends he though the land was beautiful and asked his Shawnee interpreter for the translation of the word. In 1861 , Kansas became part of the United States and was a free state. This meant that it would not allow slave holding within its borders. Temperatures vary greatly depending on the season and can go as high as ninety degrees in the summer ,but drop to twenty degrees in the winter.
