Located on the San Francisco Bay, Oakland is a city in the American state of California. It is also the 44th largest city in USA with a population of 404,155 people. Originally inhabited by the Native American Ohlone tribe Oakland turned to a timber town with the coming of the Spanish explorers. Towards the 1940s it became a hub of war industries and attracted a lot of migrant population from across the world. Over time, Oakland has seen a lot of socio economic upheavals like unemployment and high crime rates plus 2 major natural disasters (Loma Prieta earthquake and an urban firestorm). But despite of some hard times the city is on the road to fast development and is home to several national level industry giants like the Kaiser Permanente, Clorox, Dreyers and Cost Plus World Market. The city earns also its economic income from marine cargo transport industry from the west coast port. All year around the Oakland enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean weather with dry and warm summers and a mild but wet winter. The largest urban saltwater lake in the United States, Lake Merritt is located here. Interestingly the Rocky road ice cream and popular Mai Tai cocktails are Oakland originals.
