Miami Gardens is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The city name comes from one of the major roadways through the area, Miami Gardens Drive. The city of Miami Gardens is the third largest city in Miami-Dade County. Miami Gardens is the largest city in Florida that has a majority of black residents. Miami Gardens is governed by a seven member City Council. The Miami Gardens Police Department is the lead agency for Law Enforcement activities within the City of Miami Gardens. The city of Miami Gardens currently has a population of 100,809 residents. Seventy-nine percent of the population is African-American, approximately sixteen percent of Hispanic origin, approximately fifteen percent are Anglo American and six percent of other origin. One of the challenges that the City of Miami Gardens faces is establishing its own unique identity. The city is actively forming partnerships with faith based organizations to help build community support and participation among its residents. It has taken an active role in identifying outstanding contributions made by local citizens and police officers who perform beyond the call of duty. The current Mayor the Honorable Shirley Gibson has identified ongoing beautification projects and code enforcement as crucial to the success of the city. Miami Gardens is also home to Saint Thomas University and Florida Memorial College whom the city is actively forming partnerships with Miami gardens. The city is home to the Miami Dolphins and Florida Marlins, both of whom play in Land Shark Stadium (formerly Dolphin Stadium).
