Mesa is a city located in 20 miles south of Phoenix, in the state of Arizona. The history of the city goes back to Hohokam Indians of more than 2,000 years ago. The name Mesa comes from the topographical aspect of the land where the city rises. As the third largest city in Arizona, Mesa had an estimate of around 460,000 population in 2008. Falcon Field Airport and Williams Air Force Base, built in 1941, were the main agents to effect the growth of the city during the last 70 years. Many military families, including that of John J. Rhodes, later minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, decided to settle in Mesa after the World War II. The city became home to some aerospace and high-technology companies since then. The Polytechnic campus of Arizona State University is in Mesa now. The dry, clean air with an average temperature of 86 degrees and low humidity makes Mesa a popular tourism destination for people from all over the country.
