Nicknamed the Heart of Georgia, Macon, GA is centrally located in the state due south of Atlanta. The city has a population of 93,000 people in an area of 56.3 square miles. Before the city was established, the area was the site of Fort Benjamin Hawkins, which was built in 1806 upon the orders of Thomas Jefferson, the President at the time. During the Civil War, Macon, GA was designated as the official arsenal of the Confederacy. Luckily, Macon, GA was spared from devastation during Shermans March to the Sea. After the war, the city grew and prospered. Macon is currently the home of Robins Air Force Base, the largest single industrial site in the state. Macon, GA is home to over 30,000 college students. These students attend such universities as Wesleyan College, Mercer University, and Macon State College.
