The beginning of the 17th century saw an influx of whites into the Merrimack Valley which was mostly inhabited by Partucket group and Pennacook Indians.These natives survived on lumbering and fishing. Another river civilization found along the River Concord were the Warmesits. Soon the white people bought acres and acres of land from the natives and acity started to develop part by part. Reverend John Eliot also set up a church in 1647. The Praying Indian Reservation was set aside for the Warmasits by the Massachusetts court on the petition filed by reverend Eliot.
The area was developing fast in various sectors like small milling,manufacturing,lumbering et. At this time Francis Cabot Lowell a Newburyport businessman was in Great Britain in an attempt to regain his health. He gained very good knowledge about the textileindustries there and when he returned he along with others invested in the Boston Manufacturing Company and later came to be called the Lowell System. Lowell died in 1817 leaving aflourishing company to Patrick Jackson. His philanthropic nature and business acumen was the source of the success of the area, and in 1826 the town of Lowell came into existence.
Lowell National Historical Park, University of Massachusetts Lowell,Vandenberg Esplanade are a few of the points of interest. Market Basket, Cash Carriers, Stuarts Department Stores, Telephone Numbeers etc are based in Lowell. The Merrimack valley, Lowell Folk Festival, various parks, museums and art galeeries are other tourist attractions.
