The Los Angeles area consists of almost 20 million residents, with another 24 million visitors every year. Founded in 1781, the city was originally home to 14 families with a much longer Spanish name (El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de la Porciuncula). However, as the population grew the name quickly shrank to its present day Los Angeles. Currently, the city is home to 80 theaters and 300 museums, both of which top every U.S. city. Los Angeles currently names the bird of paradise as its official flower and the coral tree as its official tree, both of which can be seen around the city. The average rainfall in Los Angeles is only 15 inches, making it much like a desert despite the plethora of water and palm trees in the area.
