Built on former reservation land, Lawton was once home to the Native American tribes of Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache. Found in the year 1901 as a lottery town Lawton has lately been deriving its socio economic funds from the economy found and maintained by the Fort Sill Army Post. Located very close to the Wichita Mountains, the city is like typical prairie region in the great trees, with a dry weather and few trees. Regardless, it is a modern city in synch with the changing world and has a host of socio cultural attractions to offer, like 3 major hospitals, the Cameron University (4th largest in the state), 3 museums and 80 parks. Lawton is home to several notable country singers like Bryan White, Kelly Willis, and Leon Russell, Grammy nominated jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig and Academy Award winning actress, Joan Crawford.
