The City of Las Vegas, NV began as a temporary stop on the journey to California. In the mid 1800s, a Native American tribe known as the Paiutes resided in the area now known as Las Vegas. Mormons erected a settlement in hopes of converting the Paiutes, but they abandoned the settlement. In 1905, the City of Las Vegas, NV was officially established and became a popular railroad stop. Other important historical happenings were the building of the Hoover Dam during the Great Depression and the organized crime schemes in the 1940s. A military base also contributed to Las Vegass growth in the 1960s.
Today, the City of Las Vegas, NV is best known for its casinos and gambling. The roots of that modern profile are Howard Hughes, an industrialist and film producer who, in the 1960s, bought up large swaths of the town that ultimately became the Las Vegas Strip.
Las Vegas has an arid, desert climate with little rain. Its economy is based on tourism and gaming.
