Laredo, Texas origionally was founded in May of 1755 by Captain Thomas Sanchez and three other families as part of a land grant. Originally it was operated as a ranchero privately owned and farmed by Sanchez. The city was not officially platted until 1767 and was then primarily used for ranchers. On a strategic road for cattle drives it became an important place for the cattle trade in Texas and grew because of that. When Mexico won their freedom from Spain, it was incorporated in 1821 as a Mexican city. They City Of Laredo grew in population and economically through the cattle and wool trade, but was often the site of indian raids as the settlers fought the several tribes in the area and suffered some damage to rancheros in the vicinity. In January of 1840, the citizens broke from Mexico to form the Republic of the Rio Grande, but fell to theMexican army in less than a year. The republic of Texas was interested in Laredo joining but the citizens were not interested and stayed with Mexico. Later on after the Mexican-American War, it was annexed by the U.S. The arrival of the railroads in 1881 transformed Laredo from a amall village basically to the boom town it became. The new businesses the railroad inspired caused a influx of immigrants seeking jobs from Europe and other places in the world. Also because of its location, it was and remains a major point of entry to Mexico which also encourages thriving import/export trade along the border.
