Irving, TX has a relatively short and varied history. Originally founded as Gorbit in 1889, the area had one additional name change to Kit, in 1894, prior to adopting the official name of Irving in 1903. Founded by settlers J.O. Schulze and Otis Brown it is believed the town was named after Nettas, Browns wife, favorite author, Washington Irving. After incorporating in 1914, the area had little to no growth until the 1930s when a large influx populated the area increasing the numbers of the original 357 inhabitants. Today, Irving, TX is home to more than 200,000 residents. The area is also well-known for a number of past or present celebrities such as Brian Bosworth, Lee Harvey Oswald, Christopher Welch and Selena Gomez. Irving, TX is also home to a number of well-known entities and organizations such as the University of Dallas, opening in 1956, the Dallas Cowboys football team and the Boy Scouts of Americas headquarters.
