In 1805, John Hunt came to Alabama from Tennessee, at that time Alabama was there as a part of Mississippi Territory. John Hunt built his log cabin in the beautiful wooded valley to attract the other pioneers. Sixty acres of the land were purchased by a planter of the Broad River area in Georgia. A city newspaper was established in 1812. After a year the system was made up of a wooden pump, wooden storage tank, and a few hundred feet of hollowed cedar logs. During 1819, Alabama was defined as a state, and Huntsville was established as the first Capital. Due to civil war and reconstruction, Huntsville again set the pace in Alabama. Industry declined in the 1930s on account of World War I. In 1958, the whole U. S. Army missile development and training program were established in Huntsville.
