Fort Collins, CO began as a military outpost in 1864. This base was established to protect a mail route from Indian attacks. Population began to grow once Colorado became a state in 1876. Besides the University, the largest employers in the area include Hewlett Packard and Poudre Valley Health. The town is the home of former Colorado Senator Wayne Allard and the actor Jon Heder, who played the title character in the cult classic movie Napoleon Dynamite. The city was named by Money Magazine as the best place to live in the United States in 2006 and finished second in 2008.
