Perhaps best known as the home of Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, NC is located in Cumberland County in North Carolina. Named for a French general that aided the Americans in the Revolutionary War, Fayetteville has been settled by humans since at least 12,000 years ago. The Indian tribes that controlled the area were driven out during a series of conflicts, leading to European settlement that led to the settlement of Fayetteville, NC in 1762. The area has grown tremendously, with the current population topping 200,000. Today, the areas economy is dominated by the military. In addition to Fort Bragg, the Pope Air Force Base also provides employment to numerous residents. Some notable former residents of Fayetteville, NC include Jerry Richardson, the owner of the Carolina Panthers, the actress Julianne Moore, and former US Senator Frank P. Graham.
