Eugene Franklin Skinner erected the first cabin in 1846 in the now called Eugene in Oregon. Kalapuya Indians were the aborigines of the Willamette Valley and used to frequently burn grass to clear brush and provide better habitat for vegetation. This resulted in grassy prairie with Isolated White Oaks by the time Settlers arrived in. Eugene served as a trading post and authorized state office in 1850. Eugene in heavy winter used to become a quagmine or in simple words a Mud Hole and thus, a revised plan for the town was also floated in the year 1853. As the settlers arrives in, various mills started cropping up such as Flour Mill, Woolen Mill and some Saw Mills on the banks of Willamette River. The city had a population of almost 500 to 600 inhabitants by 1858. According to some Statistics in OR, Eugene was then served by nine dry goods stores, two book stores, a drug store, a bakery, a restaurant, two hotels, two saloons, two printing offices, three doctors, four lawyers, four clergy, one newspaper and an assortment of blacksmiths, cabinet makers, painters, and other tradespeople. The first college to come up was Columbia College. Telegraph reached Eugene in 1865 alongwith the Territorial Road. A big leap was then taken by the Transportation sector when the Oregon to California Railway was completed to Eugene which called for big celebrations in the whole town. The said community adopted a new name City of Eugene in 1868. As the first election for the city council came by in 1865, The council consisted of a president, recorder, treasurer, street commissioner, marshal and six trustees.Eugene sees an average annual temperature of 52.1 degrees. Temperatures are mild year round, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. As on date Eugene is the second largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Lane County.
