Escondido, California is a city of about 145 thousand people located North of San Diego. Its name is derived from the Spanish word for hidden, due to the valley it was founded in being surrounded by hills. Originially a Native American settlement, the Spanish controlled the area starting in the late 1700s up until the area became part of Mexico when it declared independence. It became part of the United States of America after the Mexican-American War. The city has an average of 15 inches in precipitation a year, primarily through the winter. The average temperatures for the year range from a low of about 68 degrees in January to highs around 89 degrees in July and August. Notable residents have included actress Vanessa Hudgens and actor Richard Denning.
