El Monte, California is the centerpiece of the San Gabriel Valley, approximately 12 miles away from Los Angeles. The town received its name from the missionaries who stopped here, who were blessed by the meadows and marshlands that are the primary topography. El Monte grew dramatically in 1849, when prospectors seeking gold ventured to the area. Few found gold, but many stayed for the fertile soil. Approximately 116,000 residents are proud to call El Monte home. In the 1920s, El Monte developed a lion habitat, where 200 lions lived, which were used by MGM. Today, the residents of El Monte are primarily Latino, with 72% listing Hispanic as their ethnic heritage. A primary employer is Longo Toyota, the largest auto dealer in the U.S. The El Monte Museum shares the history of the town with visitors.
