The city of Des Moines was incorporated in 1851 and founded in 1843. It originally was to be called Fort Racoon due to its location on the Racoon River. The U.S War Department decided to name the settlement Fort Des Moines instead. In 1857 the state capital was moved to Des Moines from Iowa City. The first organized Coal mining operation began in 1864 and by 1908 most of the coal in the region was exhausted. Des Moines is headquarters to several insurance companies including Principal Financial Group, Marsh, and EMC Insurance Group. Mercy Medical Center is one of the major hospitals located in Des Moines is one of the largest employers in the area as well. Forbes magazine ranked Des Moines in 2010 first in the list of Best Places for Business and Careers
