Dayton was founded by Isreal Ludlow in 1796 along the Great Miami River in Southwest Ohio. It remained a relatively small community until the war of 1812 when it became a point for mobilizing American troops for attacks on the British in Canada. Dayton began to thrive after the war with several businesses and industries formed. After the connection was made to Cincinatti by the Miami and Erie canal in 1829, the city of Dayton took off and by 1840 was one of the wealthiest cities in Ohio. Dayton became heavily involved in early industialization efforts in Ohio and was the home office for National Cash Register co. founded in 1880 by John Patterson. As the twentieth century arrived Dayton continued to thrive and is known famousely as the home of Wilbur and Orville Wright who moved there in. During recent years Dayton has become known for what is called the Dayton Peace Accords. In 1995, Serbianand Bosnian representatives negotiated peace agreements at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton.
