Chesapeake, VA is an American city in the state of Virginia. The city has a long, varied and exciting history. The first settlement began around 1620 when English communities settled along the banks of Elizabeth River. In 1861, the first local encounter of the Civil War occurred at Sewells Point, although no battles were fought in the Chesapeake area, the Union troops occupied and laid waste to much of the land. After the end of war, Norfolk County took advantage of its abundant natural resources, which includes its coastal location, miles of riverfront and harbors and the fertile, level farmland allowed county residents to get out quickly from the wartime destruction, moving without any difficulties into the 20th Century. By the year 1900, South Norfolk had its own waterworks, public schools, a post office, and two rail lines, which showed rapid growth in the city, which enhanced South Norfolk to get incorporation as an independent town in 1919 and a city of the first class, independent of Norfolk County, in 1950. Later, in February 1962, the citizens of communities, the city and the county, turned out in near record numbers for a special election and approved the merger. Later in the same year, in June, the citizens voted again for selecting the name Chesapeake for the new city. Currently, Chesapeake is a quality mixture of rural and urban centers, providing its citizens with excellent schools, recreational, cultural, and infrastructural facilities as the city continues to grow. The areas first Japanese company is, Sumitomo, which moved to Chesapeake in the year of 1988. Chesapeake, VA is the hometown of four times World Kickboxing Champion Bubba Blackhawk Walters and many famous baseball players also.
