Buffalo, NY is the second largest city in population in the state of New York, and is located in the far western portion of the state. The original settlement began in 1804 and was incorporated in 1822. In between this time the city was destroyed during the War of 1812 by British forces. The town quickly grew into a city after the Erie Canal was completed in 1825. This waterway made Buffalo a major player in global trade and opened up a route to travel into the future Midwest section of the United States. Grover Cleveland, the 22nd President of the United States, lived in the city. Buffalo was one of the largest industrial cities in America for over 100 years, and was number one in steel production for decades. In recent times the city has lost most of its industrial enterprise and instead has turned to services, such as healthcare services. The city is named after nearby Buffalo Creek.
