Bellingham, Washington is the largest city in Whatcom county. It is the twelfth largest city in the state. Bellingham, Washington was incorporated on July 29, 1904. The current population of the city is estimated to be about eighty thousand people. The area was named for Sir William Bellingham. The local bay was also named for him by George Vancouver, who visited the area in 1792.The city saw its first major influx of settlers in 1858 when the gold rush came to Fraser Canyon. Miners poured in from all over the country to Bellingham, Washington in the hopes of becoming rich. The population of the town seemingly doubled overnight. Academy award winning actress Hilary Swank was born in Bellingham. She shares her hometown with Jason McGerr and Ben Gibbard of the group Death Cab for Cutie. It is also the home of the Northwest Film School, a training ground for up and coming actors in the region.
