Baton Rouge, Louisiana, boasts a long and rich history. Although it was initially settled by Europeans in 1699, researchers have found evidence of Native American societies dating back to 8000 BC. However, in the last 300 years since the initial French settlement, Europeans have come to dominate the population of this southern American state. Located along the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge is a subtropical climate with humid air and plenty of rain. The city has long, hot, humid summers with milder winters. Baton Rouge is impacted by hurricanes, and although it was not directly impacted by Hurricane Katrina, it did experience an influx of residents following the exodus from cities that were impacted by the environmental disaster. The weather hasnt stopped modern Baton Rouge from earning Portfolio Magazines ranking in the top 10 places for young adults. In fact, today Baton Rouge is a thriving city with more than 800,000 residents and strong growth expectations. Although the city got its name from the red stick (baton rouge) that marked the site, Baton Rouge, Louisiana is truly an up-and-coming city.
