Founded in 1869 as a town of 600 residents, many of whom were originally miners who came to pan for gold in the Kern River during the California Gold Rush, the city of Bakersfield, California has grown from those humble beginnings into one of the states principal cities. The regions thriving agricultural industry and oil deposits have made Bakersfield a distribution center for these commodities, with manufacturing figuring largely in the citys economy as well. This, plus the dry, mild climate, and natural beauty of the surrounding San Joaquin Valley, has made Bakersfield one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. The city is probably best known nationally for its connection to country music, having been home to enough stalwarts of the genre, including Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, to have developed a regional style known as the Bakersfield sound.
