Located directly across the Potomac River from Washington, Arlington, Virginia, formerly known as Alexandria County, is home of the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery. In 1800, this county sported 1172 slaves among its approximately 6000 residents. Arlington, VA., originally part of the District of Columbia, has no incorporated towns or cities in its borders and is 26 miles of urban county. This county was also the location of three Radio towers that in 1915 made the first trans-atlantic communication with the Eiffel tower. The national clocks were set by the signal from these towers. They were dismantled in 1941 as they were a danger to aircraft. Arlington, VA has the most highly educated population in the nation though one in five of its diverse residents is foreign-born and one in four is bilingual.
