Ann Arbor, Michigan was founded by John Allen and his wife Elisha Rumsey in May of 1824. They myth that thename was a combination of his two wives names is untrue. The land of the origional purchase was 640 acres. John Allen opened a grist mill on the site and the town quickly flourished with several mills and small businesses including a general store. Ann Arbor won the bid for the University of Michigan by offering 40,000 acres for the building of the university in 1837. In 1839 the Michigan Central Railroad came and establised Ann Arbor as a hub for regional transportation. Ann Arbor was not incorporated as a city until 1851 and attrqacted large numbers of German, Irish, and Canadian immigrants in the coming years. In WW2 Ann Arbor was known as a center for war production and turned out B-24 bombers. Ann Arbor is the site for many historic events in the twentieth century including speeches by John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. It is also known for president Gerald Ford who played football for the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor is also known for many Rock bands that made there home there such as Alice Cooper, Iggy Rock and Bob Seegar and The Silver Bullet Band.
