Allentown, PA is the third largest city in Pennsylvania and makes up the heart of the Lehigh Valley. Allentown, PA was first incorporated as Northamptontowne, but was called Allens Town after its founder, William Allen, Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The was settled primarily by German, also called Pennsylvania Dutch, immigrants. Allentown played a key role in the revolution when the liberty bell was housed at Zions church. The 1850s and 1860s saw Allentown become a booming hub of the iron business. However, since World War II, its manufacturing base has been suffering, as was memoralized in the Billy Joel song, Allentown.
