Located right next to the nations capital, Alexandria, VA is the home of Arlington National Cemetery. Originally part of the District of Columbia, it was the victim of a retrocession to Virginia. With its proximity to Washington, D.C., obviously government is a huge employer in the area. The levelof crime had been declining since 1997. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of over 128,000. Some famous people that once called Alexandria home include George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and Gerald Ford. The city has experienced a substantial decrease in crime since 1970. Alexandria benefits from its location very near to the Washington D.C. Metro network, which speeds commute times into the main city. Its sister cities include Caen, Fr, Dundee, Scottland, and Gyumri, Armenia. Alexandria has never had a strong mineral or gold industry, but has always been more of a white color town.
