Vermont, a small state in the Northeastern United States, is unique in many ways. It is one of only four states (along with California, Texas, and Hawaii) that was once an independent nation. It was briefly independent before it was admitted to the Union in 1791. Blessed with great natural beauty, Vermont is known for the Green Mountains, along with Lake Champlain on its northern border. Unlike much of the Northeast, Vermont proudly retains much of its original rural character. Its largest city, Burlington, only has a population of 38,000 people. The state is home to many companies, but perhaps the most famous of these is Ben and Jerrys, known worldwide for its ice cream. No Vermonters have ever served as President, although former Governor Howard Dean did make a strong run at the Democratic nomination in 2004. All in all, the 46th largest state in the country is a truly unique place to experience.
