Oklahoma, the Sooner State, entered the union in 1907. It is known as the Sooner State because settlers entered the territory to mark their claims sooner than they were supposed to. Before it was a state, it was known as Indian Territory, as this was the area the native people of the nation were forcefully transferred to. Oklahoma is known for its conservative politics, and has some of the most right wing Senators in the nation in Tom Coburn and Jim Inhofe. Blessed with some of the strongest winds in the world, wind power is an increasingly common sight in Oklahoma. The state now boasts over 1,000 megawatts of wind power. Speaking of wind, watch out for tornadoes! The location of the movie Twister, Oklahoma has the highest number of tornadoes per square mile of anywhere in the country.
