New Hampshire joined the union on June 21, 1788 as the ninth state to join. New Hampshire is nicknamed the Granite State for is great amount of this natural resource. New Hampshire is a small state with only 10 counties, but 72 state parks. The state was named for a county in England by Captain John Mason who was born in England. Captain Mason, a man who had served as governor of Newfoundland for six years from 1615 to 1635, was part of the founding of Portsmouth in 1630. New Hampshire has been an industrial state for a long time due to its vast supply of water power. The most important industries in this state are machinery, especially electrical machinery, paper products, pulp, stone or clay products and textiles. The climate in New Hampshire is continental or humid continental with short cool summers and cold winters. Typical temperatures are 21 degrees Fahrenheit in January as the daily high and 70 degrees Fahrenheit in July for the high. The coldest temperature ever recorded was in Pittsburg in January of 1925 at -46 degrees Fahrenheit. The hottest temperature ever recorded was 106 degrees Fahrenheit on July 4, 1911 in Nashua. Rainfall comes to an average of 37.6 inches annually while snow is abundant at around 65 inches yearly in the metropolis city of Concord. Strong winds and even more snow occur in the mountains with the fastest wind outside of tornadoes being 231 mph on April 12, 1934. The largest cities here are Manchester, Concord, Nashua, Dover, Rochester, Keene and Portsmouth. The White Mountains are found in New Hampshire.
