Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, has an interesting and diverse history. Its famous lakes were formed during the last ice age, where glaciers carved deep depressions and as they receded, the melting ice filled them with water. Before the arrival of European settlers, many native tribes called the area home, such as the Sioux. White settlement started at Fort Snelling, near present day Minneapolis. Due to the presence of the Mississippi river and the hydro power it provided, a huge flower milling industry developed in Minneapolis, resulting in a population boom and the nickname Mill City it still holds today. The most famous politicians in Minnesota history are no doubt former Vice Presidents Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale. Today, Minnesota is home to some of the most well known companies in the world, such as Target, Best Buy, 3M, General Mills, and Medtronic.
