The state of Michigan is situated in the great lakes region and is the only state comprising two peninsulas. Formally known as Michigan Territory the sate joined the USA on the 26th of January 1837. Prior to the arrival of Europeans the territory was home to several indigenous tribes and the state was named adapting a word mishigama used by the tribe Ojibwa meaning large lake. The French were the first to settle in Michigan before being handed over to the British. The State is the birthplace of the American auto industry and to this day the largest city Detroit remains as the automotive capital of the USA. The Home state of the 38th US president Gerald Ford and the Gerald R. Ford Museum is located in the state along with many natural attractions owning to the geography surrounding Lake Michigan including waterfalls and rapids. Michigans proximity to Canada has always made the state important to americas natural resource health, as gold, oil and other minerals travel from the great north into the USA.
