Maryland, one of the original 13 colonies, has a long and interesting history. Maryland, though initially settled by Protestants, was one of the first places in the New World to welcome Catholics and those of other faiths. With Baltimore being one of the largest cities in the New World, Maryland was an important point during the Revolutionary War. It became the 13th state to ratify the Articles of Confederation, joining the Union in 1781. Several corporate powers are headquartered in Maryland, including Lockheed Martin, Marriott, Constellation Energy, Black & Decker, Legg Mason, and many others. The political environment in Maryland is heavily influenced by its proximity to Washington DC and is heavily Democratic. The States two Senators, Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin, both lean toward the left in the Democratic caucus. Marylands history is awe inspiring, and its nearly six million people will help lead the nation into the 21st century.
